Growing Up in Hawaii The future champion was born on a summer day in 1992. Growing up in the Hawaiian Islands, she had an environment perfect for learning surfing. Her father, her early coach, introduced her to surfing at an early stage of childhood. Together they spent long hours practicing. These early experiences helped build her confidence.
